The Common Thieme started in a grocery store parking lot. I had just finished a ten minute monologue on some local news and closed with “I should write this down.” My (very patient) mother responded, “You could do that, you know.”
And now here we are.
My goal for this project is to draw attention to the stories that get passed up by the national media, or overshadowed by political drama. Some of these are local stories, the effects of which I can see with my own eyes. Some are national or international stories that slid by the public consciousness in a two paragraph article. All of them are stories that matter.
My philosophy is that news doesn’t exist in a vacuum. All stories, local or otherwise, connect to bigger patterns, and these are the connections that I am interested in finding.
Writing is a work in progress. I am always trying to make my writing as clear as possible, especially when explaining complicated events. I also take my academic integrity seriously. Even if I don’t use a full Chicago-Turabian citation, I will always include a link to the article referenced, and credit other researchers/writers who were crucial to my research.
